057° .DIRTY BRAZILIAN JAZZ. selected by Les Mains Noires

$

Yes I know...almost 9 months without a proper selection...
I can only apologize for this and tell you that no, I do not forget you and no, I'm not dead!
Just starting a new part of life in Sao Paulo since a bit more than a year now!
Goma-Gringa's project is taking the main part of my time, and It's a pleasure!
My records are still in France and I do not have a correct system to record my new founds here.
That are the reasons of such an absence!

But here finally is a new selection!
I'm proud to present to you 18 tracks collected mainly while my six first months here.
You'll easily understand the title refering to the succesful 'Dirty Carribean Jazz' serie and his raw, oldie and perfumed mood!
So yes, that's a 48 min long journey through Brazilian sounds from the 40s, 50s and early 60s that I propose to to you to discover or rediscover.

The selection featured Samba Jazz, Batuque, Chote, Capoeira, Baião, Pontos Cruzados and more...
Trying to give you a small overview of the Brazilian musical diversity and richness.

Give it an ear,
and please, let me know your thoughts about it.

To end up the year, here is another discovery made here in Sao Paulo.
I have to say that I sincerely had a crush for this band. That kind of crush I regulary have over here and that makes me think seriously of starting production!

Marco Nalesso e a Fundação is a kind of laboratory of rhytmic combinations,
exploring new sounds coming out from melting foreign rhythms with purely Brazilian ones.
The result is a progressive blent of Groove, Rock, Jazz, Afro, Samba, Maracatu, Capoeira and more.

Dense, mesmerizingandexplosive!
An extremelypromisingband!

Released on CD only, limited to 500 copies buffered by hands.

Annoucement of a new Analog Africa release is always a moment full of pleasure, excitement and surprise!
And here is the last one, Analog Africa's 3rd volume about the most emblematic and legendary Beninese band, the Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou! You may think something like 'Oh, one more volume....' but watch out ! Don't get it wrong! This volume may be the best of the serie!
It's when you think that you already know everything that arise something showing you that you're only at the beginning!
From pure Vodoun rhythm to Afro Bossa Nova, the compilation presents 14 unexpected and highly addictive tracks recorded by the band between 1969 and 1980!

Here is in worldwide exclusivity one track extract from the compilation and that appear to be my favorite:

ORCHESTRE POLY RYTHMO DE COTONOU - ADJRO MI

Cavacha Fon composed by Vincent AHEHEHINNOU
Originally released on Sema-Benin / ED.SEMA 002

Dedicated to the memory of the band leader Melome Clement, who sadly left us on last December, this release has another special taste to me.
I'm indeed very proud to be able to say that I've been invited by Samy Ben Redgeb, label's owner, to create the cover and full packaging of the release in a pure 'LesMainsNoires' style! Great! Many thanks for your trust Samy!

Do not forget to check this video just put online by Analog Africa of a band's live perfomance on TV!
Original and amazing feature!

------------------------------------------------------------

While 2010 and 2011, I've been lucky enough to have Manu and Paulo as my bosses, at Superfly Records! One year and a half where I've learned so much. I'll never be able to thank them enough for the trust they put in me and for the inestimable knowledge they shared with me!
In between, I also have to admit that those years has been extremely valuable to my humble record collection ('Basement vol.1 & vol.2 among other).

The pictures and questions that follows has been made while those years and stayed in my hard-drive until now. Pics has been shot at Manu's place and while a digging trip in Brussels.

And as always, the questions are accompanied by a 17 tracks compilation selected by Manu through his own record collection!
A mixture of Spiritual and Afro rooted Jazz, West Indies Fusion, Obscure Rare Groove, Latin, Afro Psych and Vocal Jazz.
Enjoy!

Alfredo Bello aka Dj Tudo is someone I already posted about.
Pillar of the new musical scene in Brazil, the musician, producer, dj, ethnomusicologist and tenacious researcher is just back from a month spent in Europe with his luggage packed with 2 new releases!
Perfect to wait until his new Lp expected around August 2013! Be sure that I'll be here to let know about this as soon as It will be available.
And so, It is not one but two tracks that I'm posting! Check it!

.DJ TUDO E SUA GENTE DE TODO LUGAR - NA AVENIDA DO FORTE  Ao Vivo.
&
.FORRÓ DE REBECA - DESPEDIDA Dj Tudo Remix.

The first track is extracted from the Live double Lp. Recorded on July 29, 2011 at the Auditorio Ibirapuera, Sao Paulo, Brazil, this show has been a huge celebration to music!
25 musicians all together on stage playing Dj Tudo compositions from his 2 LP (Garrafada and Nos Quintais do Mundo) and extra compositions as the one I chose to post, 'Na Avenida Do Forte'.

The second has quite a special taste to me as it envolves my hometown.
Indeed, in 2008, in Lyon, has been founded a band called 'Forro De Rebeca'. As its name indicate, the band is playing traditionnal Brazilian North Eastern rhythms. The formation gradually forge a solid reputation, asserting them self as a reference in the style.
In contact with Alfredo since years, they invited him to make remix of their last record.
The result is super nice EP that could actually be called a 'Versus EP'. Indeed, you'll find one the A side 4 tracks by the band and on the B side, the same tracks, remixed by our dear Dj Tudo;
once more a great mixture of tradition seen through modernity!

Dear friends,
Searching in my pictures archives, I realised that I still didn't share with you those crazy pictures from that quite singular place. Unfortunately, I will not be able to tell you so much about this place as everyone has been quiet. One thing is sure, it do not exist anymore. I was there at the end of September 2009 and I've been quite lucky as I remember the owner of the place telling me that that was it! he has just sold the warehouse and he was going to be destroyed within two weeks! And that is what actually happen.

To be completely honest, I felt quite sad while preparing the pictures. Sad for not being able to share more infos than that with you all. But then I realised that we should all take it for what it is, a dream. Those pictures, wich are the only one existing from that place, should be seen as the illustration of that  dream, of the biggest fantasy of every record digger. But a dream that can became true and should motivate each-one of us to keep on searching, to keep on being curious!

"At one end of the decaying train line between Mali and Senegal, the Buffet Hôtel de la Gare de Bamako stands in a neglected garden surrounded by hibiscus, bougainvillea and palm trees. In its 1970’s prime and glory, this central Bamako location used to be an entertaining hub for a broad and diverse clientele : night people, businessmen, travellers, politicians, policemen, diplomats, music fans or hookers each played their parts in order to dance, drink out and rejoice to the music played by the house orchestra on a tiny stage two steps above the premises.

Nicknamed the Rail Band, the orchestra’s rhythm of seduction was the soundtrack for a golden decade in Mali’s music from 1970 to the early 1980s. Rail Band was led by Tidiani Koné, an outstanding and unsung musician who was both a griot and a jazzman. Koné’s idea was to bring Malian music out of what he felt was the dead-end cycle of Afro-Cuban and European imitations. Much to music lovers’ delight the world over, Koné was also the first to understand that Salif Keita’s voice was pure gold when he took the chance to recruit the young albino singer.

The Rail Band was established to « explore and propel the Mandingo repertoire in order to aim at the neo-classicism of the African chanson ». In combining Mandingo and Bambara folklore, Congolese rumba, and American Rhythm’n’Blues with French Pop and hints of Calypso, the Rail Band paved the way for numerous West African orchestras to follow. "Born in 1974, Florent Mazzoleni is based in Bordeaux. He began as a journalist for various media - Les Inrockuptibles, Le Monde 2, vibration, VSD, L'Optimum, Ulysses or Geo - before devoting himself to writing books on music, covering various musical genres such as rock, disco and funk.
Music lover and collector of vinyl, he developed a passion for African music he discovered in 2005 during a meeting with Ali Farka Toure in Mali.
Since then, he devoted himself fully to a better understanding of African music through the writing of books, conferences and compilations.

Florence Chavrier aka Mambo C. has been a very close and special friend for me since a very long time. She was part of this 'Les Mains Noires' project at the very beginning and to be true, It is even her who found this name first!
Many things starts together, like the interest and the research about 'tropical' music for example! Common passions about chic & perfumed 'dirty' early recordings who takes nowadays the shape of this compilation whose story is:

While her trip to Colombia last spring, Flo, gifted and informed digger, meet an old collector in the suburbs of Medellin. The old man took a liking and probably conquered by the charm of Flo, agreed to take her home to sell him some records.
In the midst of those there were many 45 rpm, including several releases from the small cult label 'Silver'...

"Silver label has been set up in about 1950 in Medellin by Julio and José Ramirez Johns, Antioqueno merchants and indistrialists who had also been distributing Colombia and Odeon records in the city. They recorded international and national artists, including a lot of material by Lucho Bermudez and Leonel Ospina, although the company did not specialize in any particular type of music. The firm lasted until the early 1960s, when it was taken over by Industria Nacional del Sonido (INS)."
'Music, race, & nation: música tropical in Colombia' by Peter Wade

Thus Florence brought home the treasures unearthed at the bottom of an improbable cabin.

So I'm very thankful to her for decided to share those records here !
I hope that you all will enjoy those old Colombian vibes as much as me, as much as her!

.BIGUINE-LÉLÉ avec FRANCISCO
sous le ciel des Antilles.

Hit Parade HPR 50

Denis Mathurin Frantz alias Francisco was born on the 9th of November 1932,
at the Clinique Saint-Paul, in Fort-de-France (Martinique).
Single son, he lived a bourgeois childhood in the shadow of Mount Pelée between the villages of Saint-Pierre and Morne Rouge.
This complex and ambivalent character led a bohemian life while remaining faithful to his bourgeois origins and despite its commitment to the traditional music of his native island, he contributed a lot in the establishment of the Afro-Cuban music in Martinique.

He has revolutionized the accompanying concept of the Creole biguines and mazurkas, but he was very respectful of the specificities of these traditional forms and worked for their reintegration in the repertoire of dance band.

The pieces he recorded are few and very hard to find. He often repeats the same songs from one record to another, but each time they are renewed as they mark a deepening of his personal musical research.
The Lp we are presenting to you is his second Hit Parade album.

Check "Biguine-Lélé"

This Lp has been found, recorded and shared by My Old Friend Fred Martin so, many thanks to him.
